Guess what? They're not. In fact, they're rather good. This cockpit works fine though, especially if you've got the hardware to run at 1,x resolution. The feeling of sitting in a real plane is pretty much as good as you could get without some kind of virtual reality helmet thing, especially when waiting to launch from the pitching deck of a carrier. The avionics must be pretty realistic, because they're suitably complicated and it's hard to believe that real combat pilots have to cope with anything harder than this stuff in combat.

Although off-putting at first, once you manage to get your head round all the controls the sense of achievement and immersion is huge.

The terrain graphics are similar to F but that is where the similarities end. Hitting your afterburners on the aircraft flight deck at night leaves a pretty cool lighting effect and trying to land at night in a lightning storm on a pitching and rolling carrier deck is an incredible experience! After landing, your plane will automatically fold up its wings and park all by itself but unfortunately, you will not find any people running around on the flight deck. Probably the first thing I noticed is the overabundance of radio chatter.

Many times you will hear the radio voices talking over each other so it can be difficult to figure out to whom they are speaking and what they are saying. The authenticity is there. You definitely feel like you are part of something big. For instance, when flying back to your ship to land you must request landing on your carrier. At that point, the Marshal controller will assign you a Marshal. That is a point at a specific altitude that you must maintain until you are ordered to "push" or leave the Marshal stack for your final approach.

The Desert Storm missions are perhaps the best treatment the conflict has ever had in a computer game. As was the case in reality, most of the Iraq missions are deep night strikes with little air threat but a monstrous amount of SAM and triple-A coverage in the target areas.

The rolling hills and river valleys of Iran provide a beautiful contrast to Iraq, which is mostly long, brown and flat. Experimenting with the included mission builder—the same one used by the designers of the game—allows some insight as to how the campaign missions are constructed, with various flight groups having random odds of appearing each time the campaign engine selects a given mission. The heart of any flight sim is the plane itself. The flight model has a wonderfully fluid feel to it and the actual physics of flight are applied well.

It is far better to engage enemies at longer ranges, where the advantages of the F hold sway. The real F has a lot of horsepower for hauling those big bomb loads around, and it seems that an unladen plane should be able to climb vertically with ease.
